Oman’s Hidden Gems: Wahiba Sands, Salalah and Beyond

Of all the destinations we design journeys for, Oman is consistently the one that surprises clients most. Quieter and less developed than its Gulf neighbours by design, the Sultanate has deliberately protected its landscapes and traditions, resulting in a country of dramatic fjords, rolling dunes and mountain wadis that feels a world away from the glass towers of the wider region.

Muscat: A Gentle Introduction

Oman’s capital sets the tone for the whole country: low-rise, whitewashed and framed by rugged mountains. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and the Royal Opera House are worth a private guided visit, while Muscat’s souqs offer a more relaxed, less commercial alternative to shopping elsewhere in the Gulf.

Wahiba Sands: Arabia’s Great Dune Sea

A few hours south of Muscat, the Wahiba Sands unfold into a vast sea of orange dunes, home to Bedouin communities who still herd camels across the sand. Luxury desert camps here offer a quieter, more intimate alternative to the busier desert circuits near Dubai, with private dinners served beneath extraordinary star-filled skies.

Salalah: Oman’s Green Secret

Few UK travellers know that Oman has a monsoon season, but during the Khareef (June to September), the southern city of Salalah transforms into a lush, misty landscape of waterfalls and green hillsides, a striking contrast to the desert scenery further north. Salalah’s frankincense heritage, coconut groves and pristine beaches make it one of the region’s best-kept secrets.

Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams

Oman’s “Green Mountain” and “Mountain of the Sun” offer cooler temperatures, terraced rose and pomegranate farms, and canyon-edge luxury resorts overlooking Oman’s answer to the Grand Canyon, Wadi Ghul.

Planning Your Trip

Direct flights from London to Muscat take around seven hours, and British passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival or in advance online. October to April offers the most comfortable touring temperatures across the north of the country.
