One of the first questions every client asks us is simple: when should I go? The honest answer depends on which countries are on your itinerary, since the Middle East spans desert interiors, mountain regions and coastlines that each behave differently through the year. Here is how we advise UK clients to think about timing.
November to March: Peak Season Across the Gulf
For the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait, the cooler months from November through March offer the most comfortable daytime temperatures, typically 20-30°C, making this the best window for desert excursions, walking tours and outdoor dining. It is also, unsurprisingly, peak season, so hotel rates run higher and popular experiences should be booked well in advance.
April, May, September and October: The Shoulder Months
These transitional months bring warmer but still manageable temperatures and noticeably better rates and availability. For travellers happy to spend more time by the pool or in air-conditioned comfort during the hottest part of the day, the shoulder season can offer excellent value across the Gulf.
June to August: Egypt’s Nile and the Gulf’s Quiet Season
Summer brings intense heat across the desert interiors, and most Gulf itineraries are best avoided during this period unless your trip is heavily beach and resort-based. Egypt’s Nile Valley is similarly hot, though Cairo and the Red Sea coast remain viable with the right pacing. This is, however, when Oman’s southern city of Salalah comes into its own, cooled by the Khareef monsoon.
Jordan: A Longer Window
Jordan’s higher elevation gives it a longer comfortable season than the Gulf, with spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offering ideal touring weather for Petra and Wadi Rum, and even winter bringing crisp, clear days well suited to sightseeing, if cold at night in the desert.
Ramadan Considerations
The Islamic holy month shifts roughly 10-11 days earlier each year, and travelling during Ramadan brings a genuinely unique cultural atmosphere, along with adjusted restaurant hours and a slower pace of daytime business. We are always happy to advise on how this affects a specific itinerary.
